A review of clinical signs and diagnostics of hepatic insufficiency. Liver biopsy: Reasons to do it? Where in the liver? How many and how large should they be? An overview of different techniques and minimising complications of liver biopsy. 

Partial and complete liver lobectomy: Why, and how?

Cholecystectomy: When is it indicated? How do I manage bile peritonitis?

Deciding whether your patient has a porto-systemic shunt, and if so, is it congenital or acquired, single or multiple, intra- or extra-hepatic. An overview of liver vascular anatomy with an update on the new ideas behind the physiology of shunt formation. Pre-surgical medical stabilisation, a comparison of attenuation methods, and post-operative treatment and monitoring.


David Barker
Soft Tissue Surgeon

David is originally from County Durham, but moved to South Africa in 2003 to study. He graduated first, in 2005 with a degree in veterinary biology, and then in 2009, with a degree in veterinary science. In 2010 he began work in a busy mixed (farm and companion animal) surgery in Lincolnshire, where he also began to study for the post-graduate certificate in surgery. From 2013, he completed a rotating internship, a specialised surgical internship and was then enrolled as a surgical resident with the European College of Veterinary Surgery.

David moved to Paragon Veterinary Referrals in July 2018 to work as a soft tissue surgeon. David is interested in all aspects of surgery, but is particularly interested in trauma management and surgical oncology.
