Nurse Training and Development Lead

Samantha qualified as an RVN in 2000 and is an experienced clinical coach. She worked in first opinion Hospitals for over 10 years as head nurse before joining Calder Vets/Paragon Referrals in 2014. After developing a love of medicine during time spent working within the different referral disciplines, she progressed to manage the medical department. In 2020 Sam became our Nurse Development and Training Lead. This Leadership role is responsible for ensuring and designing the training programmes within Paragon, and ensuring that we have the highest quality and trained nurses to treat pets under our care.

Clinical Nursing Lead

Becky joined Calder Vets in 2001 and qualified as a Veterinary nurse in 2007. She has spent the last 8 years working predominately in the surgical department and has recently been promoted from Surgical Team Leader to Clinical Nursing Lead.

Her main role is to support the nurses develop their skills here at paragon. Training them to deliver the best possible care to our patients and help them to get the most out of their nursing careers.

In her spare time Becky enjoys family time and is keeping busy studying towards her certificate in surgical nursing.


Alison Mann

Diagnostics Team Leader

Alison leads the diagnostics team at Paragon, supporting the medical, surgical and neurology teams with any investigations. She has worked in veterinary nursing since 1994 at various practices around the region. She is a Clinical Coach and holds the RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing, with a long-time interest in the nursing of complex medical cases.

Alison’s latest pet is the feisty stray kitten Miranda, who many of the staff played a part in hand-rearing

Lydia graduated from Edinburgh Napier University in 2017 with a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Veterinary Nursing. Lydia won the university medal for her dedication and academic success, which included working and teaching in Asia. As part of her degree, she researched and published a new study on canine diabetes. After graduating, Lydia moved back to Yorkshire and began studying for her certificate in Emergency and Critical Care. She is passionate about intensive care nursing as well as teaching, lecturing and clinical coaching.

In the future, Lydia intends to continue studying and specialising in emergency and critical care nursing.

Out of work, she loves travelling, cooking and baking so writes a food and travel blog. Lydia also has two cats, Louis and Leonard


Melissa Searby

Surgical Team Leader

Melissa qualified as an RVN in 2015 working in a first opinion practice seeing a variety of cases and joined Paragon Referrals in 2018 as part of the surgical team wanting to focus specifically on anaesthesia and surgery. Having gained experience within the surgical team Melissa recently progressed to Surgical Team leader.

Outside of work she enjoys travelling and seeing friends and spends most weekends finding new walks and a pub lunch to finish with her Labrador Maisy. Melissa also has a horse.


Katie Roberts

Patient Flow Co-ordinator

Katie joined Calder Vets in 2003 and qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2008. During her time at Calder she helped to set up and run the hydrotherapy department, she then went on to be hospital coordinator and continued in this role when Paragon opened in 2018. In 2020 Katie became patient flow co-ordinator and her main role is ensure the smooth running of the day. Katie is also one of the practices mental health first aider and works along side other mental health first aiders within the group to help during the Covid pandemic.

Out of work Katie likes to swim ,bike and run and has completed for Great Britain.

She also has two very naughty kittens, Sid and Jim .


Helen Sorby

Helen loves working with the fabulous team here at Paragon. She has worked in the Veterinary Profession since she was 17 years of age and has a passion for all areas of nursing.

Helen joined the Calder Team 12 years ago and has relished working in the various roles within the business, moving up to Deputy Head Nurse at Calder and was Nursing Manager at Paragon until late 2019. Helen currently works part-time in our diagnostics team.

Helen loves cuddles with her two cats Jasper & Martha and enjoys spending time with her family, seeing friends, gardening and walking.


Faye Newton

Faye carried out her veterinary nursing training at Bristol University, once graduated she worked in a busy first opinion practice in Sheffield before going into referral work at the Animal Medical Centre in Thurnscoe where she developed a keen interest in surgical nursing.

Outside of work Faye does karate and regularly competes in local and national competitions.


Maddie Enderby

Maddie qualified from Harper Adams University in 2014 with a Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing. She joined Calder Vets Dewsbury in 2014 and moved over to Paragon referrals when it opened in 2018.

Maddie is part of the inpatient team at Paragon, a position which she enjoys very much. She holds a diploma in feline nursing and is also the practices ‘cat advocate’ she helped to achieve gold standard accreditation with the ISFM when the hospital opened and continues to make sure the cats hospitalised at Paragon receive the very best care.

She also enjoys working in the hospitals ICU and this year is studying towards the Vets Now certificate in Emergency and Critical Care to increase her knowledge and experience in this area.

Outside of work Maddie has 2 cats, Theo and Luna.


Nicholas Coleman

Nick graduated from Askham Bryan College in 2018 after achieving a merit award in his Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing.  Nick worked in a first opinion practice in Wakefield whilst studying and moved to Paragon in February 2018 where he now works in the Internal Medicine team.  Nick has a keen interest in Internal Medicine and aims to complete a certificate in this discipline in the near future.

Outside of work, Nick lives with his wife Jess and their three children.  He also has a whippet called Jasper, his cats Bob & Smudge and a Bearded Dragon named Apollo.  Nick enjoys watching American Football, travelling and going to watch live music

Jess started working at Calder in 2015 as a patient care assistant and moved over to Paragon in August 2018 as she enjoyed working with more complex patients. She became a RVN in December 2019 after 2 years at college. Jess enjoys the reward associated with inpatient care as patients improve during their stay. At home she has a dog who she enjoys training and walking.


Kirsty Clark

Kirsty joined Calder Vets in November 2006 and qualified May 2012 from Myerscough College.  She has been the RPS for the practice since 2016.

She has a keen interest in; soft tissue surgery, medical nursing and diagnostic imaging.

Outside of work she enjoys travelling, going to the gym and seeing friends. Most of her time is spent looking after her 2 horses and a demanding Siamese Steve.

In the future Kirsty would ideally like to further her knowledge and undertake further studies/certificates.

Rebecca graduated with a Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing in 2018. She moved to Paragon in February 2018 after completing her placement year at Calder (2016-2017).

She has a keen interest in surgical nursing and anaesthesia, and is part of the surgical team. Rebecca enjoys the variety of cases which referral nursing brings.

Outside of work she enjoys socialising and walking.


Lara McHale

Lara qualified in 1997 and worked at our sister practice, Calder Vets in Dewsbury from 2005. In 2006 she obtained the qualification of “Pet Health Advisor” and was the Senior Pet Health Advisor/Dispensary supervisor at Calder Vets, Dewsbury.

Lara started at Paragon Referrals in Nov 2019 as the Dispensary Nurse. She really enjoys working in the pharmacy, ensuring the smooth running of the area and dispensing the medication required to ensure your pet makes a full recovery.

Lara has a cat called Simon who she rescued after he was brought to the Dewsbury Hospital as a stray. She also has a miniature poodle called Wilson who is very demanding.

Her hobbies include having fun with her nieces and nephews, looking after her cat and dog and visiting steam fairs in the Summer.


Alexandra Johnson

Alex has worked at Paragon referrals since October 2018 after 4 years working in a first opinion practice.

She graduated from the college of animal welfare in 2018 with a Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and has previously obtained her Bsc Hons degree in zoo biology at Nottingham Trent university in 2012.

Alex is a valued member of the ward team and her aim is to complete a certificate in small animal nutrition. She is a clinical coach to some of our student nurses.

Alex has a very important role looking after our Practice infection control, she routinely takes swabs and audits the results.

Alex has carried out conservation work in Sri Lanka and South Africa – outside of work, she enjoys live music, travelling and long walks with her Springer Spaniel and Labrador.

Claire Graduated for the University of Northampton in 2007 with a 2:1 Honours Degree in Applied Animal Sciences.  Then she bought a ‘round the world’ ticket, which lead to her living in Australia for three years. From this point on travelling has been a huge passion of hers.

Claire qualified as an RVN in 2011 and worked in London for eight years in first opinion and referral practices. For the last two years she worked as an internal medicine nurse in a referral centre.

Claire made the decision to move to Yorkshire in 2019 to join the Paragon team and explore the northern way of life. Claire is now part of our surgical team. She is currently studying for her Improve International nurses’ certificate in anaesthesia.

My name is Katie Lee and I am a newly qualified RVN.

I completed my training at college of animal welfare. I joined Paragon in Oct 2019.

I enjoy intensive care nursing and diagnostics.

I have two Pugs, Leela and Buddy, a  cat named Eddie and also a Bearded Dragon named Draco.

I have worked in small animal practice since 2010 and qualified as an RVN in 2017. I recently moved to Paragon from a first opinion practice because I wanted to expand my knowledge in surgery & anaesthesia.

Working with specialists everyday has taught me so much over the past few months and has helped me feel confident in working with more difficult cases.

In my spare time I am kept busy running around after my 5 rescue cats and I also volunteer with the charity Street Paws, helping pets belonging to homeless people.

Jenny started off her nursing career at Calder Vets as an Auxiliary nurse at a small branch in 2013. Jenny later relocated to Calder Vets main hospital in Dewsbury to work as a Student Veterinary Nurse, where she attended Myerscough College to study for her Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.

In January 2019 Jenny obtained her qualification and became a Registered Veterinary Nurse. Since qualifying Jenny wanted to gain more knowledge and further her nursing skills, so she decided to make the move again, and came to Paragon Veterinary Referrals.

Since joining the team here at Paragon, Jenny now works as an Inpatient nurse. She is very Passionate about inpatient care and in particular has a keen interest in pain management.

Out of work Jenny enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as two cats Bobby and Eddie and her rescue dog Benji. Whenever Jenny has free time, she also volunteers at a small animal rescue centre.

I started my nursing studies in September 2016 at Myerscough College of Veterinary Nursing and became registered in January 2019. I have worked in various practices including two 24-hour emergency hospitals.

In October 2019, myself and my two pugs moved to Leeds and I started work as a Surgical RVN here at Paragon. I am also currently studying for my Certificate in Anaesthesia whilst exploring the surroundings around our new home.


Jayne Raison

Jayne graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2014 with a BSc in Animal Sciences. After this Jayne returned home to Hampshire, where she studied her VN diploma at MYF training, while working at a veterinary practice in Surrey.

Jayne started at Paragon referrals in November 2019 with a keen interest in surgical nursing, diagnostic imaging and medical nursing.

Outside of work Jayne enjoys playing pinball machines and is part of the UK pinball league. She also enjoys travelling with the European Coaster Club and visiting theme parks across the globe.

Emily qualified in 2018 with a degree in Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science from the University of Bristol. She has previously worked in first opinion practices in both Bristol and Nuneaton.

Emily has an interest for exotics, in particular rabbits, and has an interest in emergency critical care. Emily has 4 rabbits: Woody, Faye, Wispa and Steve.

In her free time, she enjoys singing, makeup artistry and going to concerts.

Sophie graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2018 with a Foundation Degree in Veterinary Nursing and has worked in first opinion and referral practice in Bristol before moving to Paragon in July 2019.

Sophie particularly enjoys looking after feline patients and has completed a certificate in feline nursing. Outside of work, Sophie enjoys ballet and aerial hoop and has two tortoiseshell cats at home called Heidi and Hazel.

Started at Paragon as a surgical nurse in Aug 2019.

Qualified as an RVN in 2016 from CAW Leeds.

Have a Bsc Degree in Zoology.

Soon starting Vets now Emergency and critical care qualification.

Interested in surgical nursing, specifically anaesthesia.

Worked for a practice in India before Paragon, helping to set up veterinary hospitals, promote RCVS gold standards and I set up a training programme, teaching nursing skills to the vets.


Laura Andrews

Laura has worked previously in an emergency out of hours and small referral vets and has undergone several work experience roles on farms and zoos.

Laura has undergone several CPDs to expand her knowledge and has a qualification in animal management. When Laura started out in the veterinary profession, she had a particular interest in surgery, however since starting at Paragon in January 2019 she has found a new love for diagnostics, imaging and oncology and hopes to pursue a career nursing on a medical team.

Outside of work Laura is a self-confessed crazy spaniel lady and has 4 Springers and a Cocker. She loves working her dogs and trialling her Springer Spaniel, Willow and dedicates all her spare time into training with her gundogs.


Billy Slater

Billy left school in 2012 with GCSE’s in public services amongst otherthings. He started a Level 3 animal management in zoological collections at Aksham Bryan and passed in 2014.

Billy joined Calder Vets in March 2015 and moved to Paragon in February 2018. Billy is throughly enjoying his time at Paragon, and enjoying learning about the different aspects of veterinary nursing – interested in being a surgical or imaging nurse

Outside of work, Billy enjoys watching movies, attending music gigs and has a great love for Leeds United FC. Currently Billy has no pets as he has plenty of exposure to the pets that come to Paragon.
