What is a vet’s referral?
This is when your primary care vet decides that your pet needs more expertise and refers your pet to a consultant vet at a referral centre.
Your usual vet may not have access to advanced diagnostic techniques such as computerised tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which are required to diagnose a number of conditions, or the facilities and staff needed to help diagnose and treat their conditions. Surgical procedures often require specialist equipment, along with the expertise to perform them.
Clinicians at referral centres have vast experience and advanced training in their field, as well as access to specialist equipment that might not necessarily be available in general practice.
I would like to come and see a particular vet; is this possible?
Yes, we will always try to accommodate your wishes if you are keen to see a particular veterinary surgeon. Obviously, this is dependent on availability and field of expertise, but we will do our best to cater for you.
What referral services do you offer?
We accept referrals in the following areas:
- Diagnostic Imaging
- Internal Medicine
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Soft Tissue Surgery
How will my appointment be made?
Please ensure you provide up to date contact details to your vet and advise them on when we can contact you.
Your vet will refer your pet to us and we will contact you directly to make an appointment. You should have copies of any X-rays or ECGs to bring with you to the appointment. This means that we can avoid repeating any unnecessary procedures.
When making a pet insurance claim, can you claim direct from the insurer on my behalf?
Yes, we can claim direct from the insurer. To do this, we need certain information, such as up-to-date insurance details, and permission to speak to your insurers about your policy. You will need to contact your insurer to ensure this. We also ask for a full clinical history, which can either be faxed or emailed on the above contact details. Usually, we carry out these checks before the referral appointment and will explain procedures when we make the initial appointment.
An administration fee is chargeable for processing each insurance claim. This are payable at the time of each visit. Should you require further information regarding this, our administration team will be happy to assist.
In the case of emergency referrals, we will deal with each case on an individual basis and carry out checks while clients are with us.

How soon will you see my pet?
We endeavour to see all urgent cases as soon as possible. When necessary, this can be within one hour of the referral being made.
Can I discuss my referral with you?
We are more than happy to advise your vet how we will manage your case prior to it coming to Paragon. For reasons of professional liability, we are unable to advise pet-owners directly, unless we have already assessed your pet.
How do I cope if I lose my pet?
When you lose a pet, it is natural to feel upset and emotional and making the decision to say goodbye is one of the hardest you’ll make. Opening up about your feelings and showing your emotion is something not to be afraid of as everyone is sympathetic to what you are going through and there are many sources of support and advice available to you at this extremely difficult time.
Support is available through our friendly and caring team here at Paragon should you and your family be in such unfortunate circumstances. There are also a number of organisations who offer a bereavement advice service including advice on euthanasia such as the Blue Cross, Our Special Friends and also a charity called Ralph.
We understand that your pet has been a part of your family and we appreciate how coping with their loss can be devastating. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions following the loss of your pet or need additional support.
What do I do if I need more medication?
Your vet will be able to dispense most on-going medications for you. If you are unable to get your medications from your own practice then we may be able to dispense them for you. You can either pick them up from Paragon or we can send them out to you.
We send medications out twice a week on Monday and Thursday. Please do not leave it to the last minute to order medications as it may take up to a week for you to receive them.
Requests submitted on Thursday to Monday morning will be sent out on Monday. Requests submitted Monday to Wednesday will be sent out on Thursday.
