How your pet is referred to Paragon Veterinary Referrals

We understand that it can be a distressing time when your pet requires veterinary care, therefore we feel it is important that you know what to expect when you attend an appointment with us at Paragon Veterinary Referrals.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Your pet may need to fast before their appointment, if this is required our client care team will let you know. If your pet is required to fast, they can have their normal evening meal the night before the consultation, but please don’t feed after 10pm, although, fresh water should be available at all times.

If your pet is currently taking prescribed medication, please follow your medication plan as normal, unless instructed otherwise. If you have any concerns regarding this, or if your pet has special dietary requirements, such as a raw food diet or is diabetic, please make us aware before your appointment.

We kindly ask that you bring your pet to your appointment, rather than a relative, friend or neighbour. At the appointment, we may need to ask detailed questions about your pet’s history, behaviour, treatment plans and the financial considerations, it is therefore important that you, the decision maker is present.

If your pet has had diagnostic treatments done at your primary care vet such as x-rays, ECGs etc and you have a copy, please bring them along.

Arrival on The Day

Please aim to arrive at Paragon Veterinary Referrals 10 minutes prior to your appointment time, this is so our friendly reception team can complete any necessary paper work or payments with you.

In reception, we have designated waiting areas for both cats and dogs as we want to ensure your pet feels as comfortable as possible when visiting us. We understand that your pet may feel most comfortable waiting in the car or carpark, if you are waiting outside, please ensure you mark your arrival with the reception team. A small dog walking area for clients can be located to the rear of the building.

There is free car parking available on-site with allocated disabled bays and a wheelchair accessible entrance. Please avoid parking in the marked blue bays as these are reserved for staff parking.

If for any reason you are running late for your appointment or wish to cancel or reschedule, please notify us as soon as possible by calling 01924 908 333

Your Referral Appointment

On the day of the appointment, you may be asked to sign documents authorising treatment/procedures which will also detail your financial obligations. It is very important you have a full understanding of your pet’s condition and what the implications of any proposed investigations and treatment may be. Please ensure that you thoroughly read and understand the content before signing. If you require any further clarification or guidance the reception team will be happy to help.

During your appointment, our clinician will take time to obtain a detailed history of your pet’s medical background and gain a full understanding of the current problem. They will perform a thorough clinical examination and dependant on the findings may decide the best course of action is to admit your pet to investigate further.

Treatment

We will do our best to carry out investigations on the same day as your consultation, however, if routine surgery is required it will generally be performed the following day.

Depending on the circumstances, it is possible your pet may be hospitalised for further diagnostic and/or surgical procedures to be carried out over the following few days. Alternatively, your pet may need to go home after the consultation and return for a diagnostic or surgical procedure at a later, mutually convenient, date. This will depend on the nature of the case.

We endeavour to work to time but just as in a human hospital, urgent or life-threatening cases will take priority.

If you are unsure about any aspect of your pet’s referral, our Client Care Team will be happy to help and can be contacted on 01924 908333.
