Minimally invasive surgery -laparoscopy & thoracoscopy

Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques have been described for a variety of procedures. Potential advantages of MIS include a less invasive approach, magnified view of anatomy, decreased post-operative pain, shorter hospitalization periods and a faster recovery. MIS can be achieved via standard ports or via a single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS). Laparoscopic techniques include, but are not limited to:

  • Ovariectomy
  • Cryptorchidectomy
  • Liver biopsy
  • Gastropexy
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Adrenalectomy

Laparoscopic assisted techniques include:

  • Enterotomy
  • Enterectomy
  • Splenectomy
  • Cystotomy

Thoracoscopy involves placement of the ports into the thorax. Thoracoscopic techniques include:

  • Pericardiectomy
  • Thoracic duct ligation
  • Pleural biopsy
  • Lymph node extirpation

When appropriate, the consulting veterinary surgeon will discuss options for MIS with the client at the initial consultation or after diagnostic imaging. Clients will be made aware of the possibility of conversion to open surgery when required. Elective laparoscopic ovariectomy is now offered at a fixed price of £650, including consultation and physical examination, general anaesthesia, surgery and medication to go home.
