SARDS

What is SARDS?

SARDS is an abbreviation of Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome, a condition involving the retina (thin layer of nerve cells at the back of the eye which convert light into electrical signals) and resulting in sudden onset of irreversible blindness.

Why does it occur?

The exact cause is unknown, however immune-mediated/genetic causes have been suggested. This condition is typically seen in middle aged slightly overweight female dogs.

Can both eyes be affected?

One of the hallmarks of SARDS is bilateral symmetric involvement

Are any breeds predisposed?

Whereas SARDS can affect any breed we tend to see it more frequently in middle aged female, Dachshunds with a recent history of weight gain.

What treatment options do I have?

Unfortunately, there is no clinically proven treatment for SARDS, however, this disease is a subject of current research.

Is my dog in any pain?

Fortunately, this disease is not painful. Although it takes time, most dogs adapt well to being blind.
